HNTB was the master architect of a terminal to replace the existing Mid-Continent Airport terminal in Wichita, Kansas with a 12-gate, 273,400-square-foot building that included improvements to entrance roadways and parking. The existing terminal remained operational throughout construction of its replacement. When it opened in Spring 2015, it was renamed Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. Two months later, the airport set a record for most passengers in a month. Built to LEED® standards, the two-floor terminal can handle 2.4 million passengers annually. Features include a large ticket counter and kiosk area, a security checkpoint with the latest TSA technology, an in-line system for processing checked baggage and historical exhibits. The building’s swooping roof is shaped to capture the appearance of an aircraft’s wing and the spirit of flight. A flexible gate system accommodates a wide range of aircraft and incorporates the largest installation of glass passenger boarding bridges in the country.
